What Are Hindus Not Allowed To Do?

Religion is a set of beliefs that guides the person on how to live life ideally. It includes restricting the person from doing such things which are not either good for him or the society. It also tells us how to do things in the right manner. Hinduism also has a set of beliefs and puts some restrictions on us so that we would live an ideal and healthy life. We will try to list out all those things which are not allowed in Hinduism.

1. Hindus are not allowed to eat beef because the cow is considered as the most sacred animal. (Shatapatha Brahmana” 3.1.2.21)

2. Killing a cow is also not allowed as it is considered as one of the biggest sins.

3. Adultery is not allowed for both males and females.

4. Premarital sex is not allowed for both males and females.

5. After consuming alcohol and/or eating non-vegetarian food, one should not enter the temple unless he/she takes a bath.

6. Women are not allowed to enter the temples during menstruation.

7. People belonging to some particular castes are not allowed to eat nonvegetarian food e.g. Brahmin, Weavers, Vaishya, etc. It depends on the region and the availability of food.

8. Killing innocent people is not allowed.

9. Hurting others physically or emotionally is considered a sin.

10. Promiscuity in thoughts, words, and deeds.

11. Wasting food. (Taittiriya Upanishad)

12. Disrespecting elders including parents and teachers. (RV 1:27:13)

13. Mistreatment of animals.

14. It is recommended to eat vegetarian food as killing animals is considered as a sin.

15. Stealing in any form. (Chandogya Upanishad 5.10.9)

16. Telling a lie.

17. Misappropriation or bribery.

18. It is recommended that you should not eat non-veg food on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and some other festival days.

19. You should not cut hair or nail on Saturdays. (Astrological belief)

  • Can you please cite your reference? Most of these points are vague and takes away the very essence of Hinduism.

    • I have given some references. Some of the things mentioned are common beliefs and logical. Not everything is written in the scriptures. I will update more references.

    There different types of marriages and it needn’t exactly be a ceremony…marriage they meant was actually the marriage of hearts or minds

    • I think you are talking about Gandharva Marriage. That is fine because it is a marriage. I didn’t say the ceremony. I said marriage.

    • Not only beef but Hinduism does not advocate killing of any animal for eating.

      Manusmriti Chapter XI:

      “Sura, (all other) intoxicating drinks and decoctions and flesh are the food of the Yakshas, Rakshasas, and Pisakas.”

      Bhagavad Gita says it is Tamasic food and is bad for our physical and mental health.

      It is quite possible that in old era some people might be eating, beef but as you know, Hinduism changes with time, most of the Hindus do not eat beef.

    • What the hell are you talking about ? Cow is considered as mother because we consume her milk lifetime and in Hindus family we worship them and even treat them as our family member.
      Other thing, I don’t know how many books of Hindus you have read, but in every books it’s sin to kill cows.
      Even Bhagwan Krishna loves cows so much that in “Vaikunth” (Residential Planet of Krishna ) they lives with him, and those who misbehaves with cows have to bear the anger of KRISHNA.
      I think you may not be knowing about “Aghoris” in hinduism, they are biggest follower of the LORD SHIVA. They eat everything even Humans but not cow. They are rarely visible now because they don’t live with normal people.
      If you say to show me the written facts, I will give you hundreds and thousands of lines describing eating or even misbehaving cow is biggest sin in the dozens of Upnishads.

      • there are scientific logic and day to day thousands of benefits from cow. Killing a cow mean you are destroying a chain of nature.
