Lotus Flower

The lotus flower is a symbol of purity, rebirth, culture, and enlightenment in Hinduism. In Latin, the lotus is called Nelumbo Nucifera. It is also known as Kamal in Hindi and Marathi. It is an auspicious as well as one of the most important symbols in Hinduism. Mostly, the pink-colored lotus flower is shown as a symbol in Hindu mythology. Lotus is also an important symbol in other religions like Buddhism and Jainism.

Brahma, who is one of the three important deities of Hindus, is always depicted as meditating on the flower of lotus. According to Puranas, Brahma was born from the lotus that originated from the navel of Lord Vishnu. Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of education, is also depicted as seated on the flower of lotus. Lotus is also an important offering in Hindu rituals. Lord Ganesha likes the flower of lotus; hence on Ganesh Chaturthi, it is offered to him. It is also shown in the hands of many Hindu deities, like Ganesha, Vishnu, Parvati, etc.

Lotus is also a symbol of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a leading national party, in India. The symbol of the lotus is imaged on many vehicles, houses, and institutions in India.

It grows in water but the water cannot wet its petals. In Bhagavadgita, Lord Krishna advises his devotees to perform their duties without attachment like a lotus.

It is also used as a medicine in Ayurveda, the ancient Hindu medical science.
