The lotus flower symbolizes purity, rebirth, culture, and enlightenment in Hinduism. In Latin, the lotus is called Nelumbo Nucifera. It is also known as Kamal in Hindi and Marathi. It is an auspicious and one of the most important symbols in Hinduism. Mainly, the pink-colored lotus flower is shown as a symbol in Hindu mythology. Lotus is also an important symbol in other religions like Buddhism and Jainism.

Brahma, one of the three crucial deities of Hindus, is always depicted as meditating on a lotus flower. According to the Puranas, Brahma was born from the lotus that originated from the navel of Lord Vishnu. Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of education, is also depicted as seated on the lotus flower. Lotus is also an essential offering in Hindu rituals. Lord Ganesha likes the lotus flower; hence, it is offered to him on Ganesh Chaturthi. It is also shown in the hands of many Hindu deities, like Ganesha, Vishnu, Parvati, etc.

Lotus is also a symbol of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a leading national party in India. The lotus symbol is imaged on many vehicles, houses, and institutions in India.

It grows in water, but the water cannot wet its petals. In the Bhagavadgita, Lord Krishna advises his devotees to perform their duties without attachment like a lotus.

It is also used as a medicine in Ayurveda, the ancient Hindu medical science.
