The Gujarat assembly passed a bill banning the slaughtering of cows on October 24, 2011, on the occasion of Dhanteras. The bill was passed unopposed as the opposition party, Congress (I), supported it.
The slaughtering of a cow, as well as the transportation of it for slaughtering, will be considered illegal, and those infringing the law will be punished with seven years ‘ imprisonment and a fine of 50,000 INR.
The cow is the most sacred animal for Hindus, and the ban on cow slaughtering should be extended to the whole of India. The Gujarat Government has taken the right step by implementing this law, considering the sentiments of Hindus.
The cow is a beneficial animal, and the cows that cannot give milk should be used for organic farming, as the cow’s urine and dung are very valuable in terms of soil nourishment.
