Kaal Bhairav Kavach

The Kaal Bhairav Raksha Kavach is a Sanskrit hymn dedicated to Lord Kaal Bhairava, a fierce form of Lord Shiva. It is believed to have originated between the 9th and 14th centuries as a part of Tantric Shaivism. There are a total of nine verses in this Kavach. This kavach is mainly used for protection from black magic.

Who wrote Kaal Bhairav Raksha Kavach?

The credit of writing this kavacha is not attributed to a single sage but different texts mention different names. Generally, it is believed that it was written by Sage Sanatkumara, Sage Markandeya, or other ancient seers,

Kaal Bhairav Raksha Kavach:

|| काल भैरव कवच ||

ॐ सहस्त्रारे महाचक्रे करपूरधवलें गुरुः
पातु मां भैरव देवो भैरवः सर्वकर्मसु ॥1॥

पूर्वे स्यामसितांगो मां दिशि रक्षतु सर्वदा
आग्नेयां च रुरुः पातु दक्षिणे चण्ड भैरवः ॥2॥

नैऋत्यां क्रोधनः पातु उन्मत्तः पातु पश्चिमे
वायव्यां मां कपाली च नित्यं पायात् सुरेश्वरः ॥3॥

भीषणो भैरवः पातु उत्तरास्यां तु सर्वदा
संहार भैरवः पायादेशान्यां च महेश्वरः ॥4॥

ऊर्ध्वं पातु विधाता च पाताले नन्दको विभुः
सद्योजातस्तु मां पायात् सर्वतो देवसेवितः ॥5॥

रामदेवो वनान्ते च वने घोरस्तथावतु
जले तत्पुरुषः पातु स्थले ईशान एव च ॥6॥

डाकिनी पुत्रकः पातु पुत्राणां सर्वतः प्रभुः
हाकिनी पुत्रकः पातु दारास्तु लाकिनी सुतः ॥7॥

पातु शाकिनिका पुत्रः, सैन्यं वै कालभैरवः
मालिनी पुत्रकः पातु पशूनश्वान् गंजास्तथा ॥8॥

महाकालोऽवतु क्षेत्रं, श्रियं मे सर्वतो गिरा
वाद्यम् वाद्यप्रियः पातु भैरवो नित्यसम्पदा ॥9॥

॥ इति भैरव कवच ॥

After reciting the Kaal Bhairav Raksha Kavach, chant Om Kaal Bhairavay Swaha (ॐ कालभैरवाय स्वाहा) mantra for 21 or 108 times.

Kaal Bhairav Raksha Kavach with Meaning:

Verse 1

ॐ सहस्त्रारे महाचक्रे करपूरधवलें गुरुः
पातु मां भैरव देवो भैरवः सर्वकर्मसु

May Lord Bhairav, the divine Guru who resides in the thousand-petalled crown chakra (Sahasrara), white as camphor, protect me always. May Bhairav safeguard me in all my actions.

Verse 2

पूर्वे स्यामसितांगो मां दिशि रक्षतु सर्वदा
आग्नेयां च रुरुः पातु दक्षिणे चण्ड भैरवः

May the dark-bodied Bhairav protect me in the East.
May fierce Ruru guard me in the Southeast.
May Chand Bhairav protect me in the South.

Verse 3

नैऋत्यां क्रोधनः पातु उन्मत्तः पातु पश्चिमे
वायव्यां मां कपाली च नित्यं पायात् सुरेश्वरः

May Krodhana (the angry one) guard me in the Southwest.
May Unmatta (the intoxicated form) guard me in the West.
May Kapali (skull-bearer) protect me in the Northwest, and may the Lord of the Gods always guard me.

Verse 4

भीषणो भैरवः पातु उत्तरास्यां तु सर्वदा
संहार भैरवः पायादेशान्यां च महेश्वरः

May Bhishana Bhairav (the terrifying one) always protect me in the North.
May Samhara Bhairav (the destroyer) guard the remaining directions.
May Maheshwar (Shiva Himself) be my protector everywhere.

Verse 5

ऊर्ध्वं पातु विधाता च पाताले नन्दको विभुः
सद्योजातस्तु मां पायात् सर्वतो देवसेवितः

May Brahma (the creator) protect me above.
May Nandaka (a fierce form) guard me in the netherworlds.
May Sadyojata (one of Shiva’s faces) protect me from all sides. He is worshipped by all divine beings.

Verse 6

रामदेवो वनान्ते च वने घोरस्तथावतु
जले तत्पुरुषः पातु स्थले ईशान एव च

May Ramdev protect me in forests,
May Ghora (terrible one) protect me in wilderness.
May Tatpurusha protect me in water,
And may Ishana (another Shiva aspect) protect me on land.

Verse 7

डाकिनी पुत्रकः पातु पुत्राणां सर्वतः प्रभुः
हाकिनी पुत्रकः पातु दारास्तु लाकिनी सुतः

May the son of Dakini protect my children in every direction.
May the son of Hakini protect my wife.
May the son of Lakini (a fierce Yogini) guard my family.

Verse 8

पातु शाकिनिका पुत्रः, सैन्यं वै कालभैरवः
मालिनी पुत्रकः पातु पशूनश्वान् गंजास्तथा

May the son of Shakini protect me and my army.
May Kaal Bhairav himself protect my warriors.
May the son of Malini protect my animals, horses, and wealth.

Verse 9

महाकालोऽवतु क्षेत्रं, श्रियं मे सर्वतो गिरा
वाद्यम् वाद्यप्रियः पातु भैरवो नित्यसम्पदा

May Mahakaal protect my lands.
May I always be protected in my speech and receive wealth from all directions.
May Bhairav, who delights in music, protect my instruments and ensure daily prosperity.
