Person worship is a very popular trend in India. There are many temples of persons who are believed to have divine powers, e.g. that of some saints, Yogis, incarnated deities, etc. But in some parts of India, you would also find temples of actors, actresses, and cricket players.
The most famous people amongst those are Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajnikanth, and some movie actresses. This is the height of the madness of the fans for their favorite personalities. It is quite natural that people follow their favorite personalities by heart. They stick pictures of them in their houses, on the doors, wear dresses like them, and follow their actions, but building a temple of theirs is very wrong. Some fans of Mamta Kulkarni have built a temple for her. She is very famous for her boldness on and off-screen. This trend is very famous amongst the people from Southern India, and I think it originated from there only. Some people are so mad behind their favorite actors and actresses that they commit suicide when the person dies! Is it not the height of foolishness? Was that person providing them with food and shelter? He was just an entertainer and was doing that for money and not for a social cause. Still, people die for them without any reason.
In Hinduism, only those personalities are worshiped who have some kind of divine powers, but the artists and players are just ordinary people, and they do not possess any kind of divine powers. Though the action of building their temples might be related to showing the extent of people’s madness about them, it is entirely wrong when you view it from the point of view of religion. Therefore, in my opinion, Hindus in India should stop building temples for such people.
