The Kanifnath Temple

The Kanifnath temple is dedicated to Saint Kanifnath, one of the powerful nine saints, collectively called Navnath. The temple is situated in Bopgaon near Saswad, Pune.

How to Go To Kanifnath Temple:

The shortest route to go to the Kanifnath Temple is through Bopdev Ghat. It is about 35 km from Chandni Chowk, Pune. If you are going from Katraj, take a right turn from Khadi Machine Chowk, and go straight. When the Bopdev Ghat ends, after a few kilometers, you will see a big board on the left side. The Kanifnath Temple entrance is printed on it. Go straight and after 1-2 km, there is the temple on the hill. A car and bike parking space is available.

What is the Specialty of Kanifnath Temple?

The peculiarity of the Kanifnath Temple is that there is a tiny window-like door to enter the inner side of the temple (Gabhara) through which even a fat person can go inside. You just have to follow the proper method. The people inside the temple will tell you how to pass through. Women are not allowed to enter the inner side where the shrine is.

How to Enter the Shrine?

Before entering, you must remove all your clothes except underwear and wear a saffron lungi provided by the temple authority. First, straighten your arms and place them inside the window, give a little push, tilt your body as if sleeping on one side, and keep pushing your body with your legs until your entire body passes through the entrance. It is a little bit eerie for the first time. While coming out, get your feet out first and follow the same procedure as you did to enter, but push your body outside this time.

There are 2-3 other temples around the main temple. A statue depicting the birth of Kanifnath Maharaj is there on the left side of the temple.

A few small snack centers are there where you can refresh yourself with tea and snacks.
